A 78-year-old man died the afternoon of Monday, Aug. 28 in a collision on Route 1 just north of Moody’s Diner in Waldoboro.
Paul Thompson, of Waldoboro, was driving southbound on Route 1 in a 2000 Chevy Camaro when he collided with Louis Tay, also southbound, of Ontario, Canada, who was driving a 1987 Volkswagen Vanagon, according to a press release from the Waldoboro Police Department.
Thompson was attempting to make a U-turn in the road, which caused the collision, according to Waldoboro Police Chief Lash.
The Waldoboro Fire Department arrived on scene to help extricate Thompson from the Camaro, as well as provide scene security and cleanup after the reconstruction, Lash said.
Thompson died on the scene, according to the press release. Tay and his three passengers were uninjured and evaluated by Waldoboro Emergency Medical Service.
Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office performed the reconstruction of the crash and Brunswick Police Department aided efforts by using a drone to map the scene.
Route 1 was shut down from 2:40 p.m. to 7 p.m. for reconstruction between its intersections with Route 220 and Old Route 1.
