Route 1 has reopened in Waldoboro after four tractor-trailers jackknifed due to whiteout conditions.
According to Waldoboro Fire Chief Paul Smeltzer, fire crews shut down Route 1 at the intersection with Route 32 and directed multiple tractor-trailers to turn around due to the weather conditions.
Smeltzer said three of the tractor-trailers were on Perry Greene Hill between Dow Furniture and the cell tower. A fourth tractor-trailer ran into difficulty in the vicinity of Bullwinkle’s Steak House.
The Lincoln County Communications Center dispatched the Waldoboro Fire Department shortly before 11 a.m. Emergency responders cleared the scene and reopened Route 1 to traffic shortly before 1 p.m., Smeltzer said.
Earlier in the afternoon, Waldoboro Department of Public Works plow trucks were pulled off the roads for about 45 minutes as conditions deteriorated, according to Waldoboro Public Works Director John Daigle.
Daigle said the plow trucks were off the road due to conditions and to give crews a chance to get something to eat. As of 11:45 a.m., the crews were back on the roads plowing.
