A 2.62 mile-long paving project is scheduled to begin on Route 1 in Waldoboro and Warren on Wednesday, Aug. 7, according to a press release from Ted Talbot, public information officer for the Department of Transportation.
The project will begin 0.24 miles south of the line between the two towns and extend to 0.02 miles past the intersection of Route 1 and Route 90 in Warren, according to the release.
Roughly the first mile of the project will receive a “mill and fill” where the existing pavement will be removed and replaced with a hot mix asphalt surface, and the remainder of the roadway will receive a hot mix overlay, according to the release.
The paving work will be performed from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. while catch basin and guard rail work as well as work out of the roadway could take place during the hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Traffic will be reduced to alternating one-way traffic – assisted by flaggers – during the night hours and the road may occasionally be reduced to one lane during the daylight hours as well, Talbot said in a telephone conversation.
Along the stretch of Route 1 being paved, sections without a curb or guardrail will have their shoulders reduced from 10 feet to eight feet, which will help make the road easier to maintain, Talbot said.
“We don’t generally build 10-foot shoulders anymore. The standard, really, is the eight foot shoulders. That’s really more of a standard approach than it is specific,” he said.
Lane Construction Corporation, of Bangor, was awarded the project with a bid of $634,806, Talbot said. The state’s estimate for the project was $661,399.99, and the only other bid received was from Pike Industries, of Fairfield, at $749,105.
The project is anticipated to be complete by mid-September, according to the release.
