The Wiscasset and Sheepscot Valley Regional School Unit 12 withdrawal committees are nearing the end of their first series of negotiations and the RSU’s board of directors will be presented the draft agreement on May 9.
The two committees finalized discussions on the substance of the agreement at their meeting in Wiscasset May 2 and have just a few final language changes to work in before their draft is complete.
If the RSU board approves the agreement, plans are to submit it to Commissioner of Education Stephen Bowen May 15 for his approval, said Malinda Caron, chair of the RSU’s withdrawal committee.
Once the draft is approved by both the board and Bowen, Wiscasset will likely bring the agreement before the voters in November, Caron said.
Wiscasset residents voted last June to begin the process of withdrawing from RSU 12, and the two committees have been meeting since December to negotiate an agreement.
In the current draft, Wiscasset is pursuing a standalone School Administrative Unit which would take back the three school facilities and bus garage located in the town, with an effective date of withdrawal on July 1, 2014.
The RSU 12 board of directors will meet Thursday, May 9 at 6:30 p.m. at Windsor Elementary School.
More details on the Wiscasset draft withdrawal agreement will be available in the May 9 edition of The Lincoln County News.
