The Wiscasset Educational Research Panel (WERP) has begun circulating a petition that could ultimately see Wiscasset begin negotiations with RSU 12 to withdraw.
Should the petition garner enough signatures, WERP would recommend the vote be held in June. If a majority approves the referendum, the Wiscasset Board of Selectmen would be required to create a panel to negotiate withdrawal terms with RSU 12 officials.
The petition requires 167 votes for it to make it on the ballot. WERP Chairman Doug Smith expressed confidence that enough signatures would be garnered.
“We’re well on our way to getting there,” Smith said.
