A number of people were injured in a two-vehicle accident at the entrance of Damariscotta Lake State Park in Jefferson the afternoon of June 26, but the worst injury appeared to have been a broken ankle, according to Waldoboro EMS Director Richard Lash.
According to Lincoln County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jason Nein, six people were transported to LincolnHealth – Miles Campus in Damariscotta for minor injuries. Lash said several others received very minor injuries, but were signed-off on at the scene.
According to Nein, a white Chevrolet passenger van carrying eight children and three adults was pulling out of the entrance of the park to make a left turn northbound on Route 32.
The operator of the van failed to see a southbound pick-up truck at first, and then attempted to get out of the truck’s path by accelerating, Nein said. At the same time, the operator and sole occupant of the pick-up truck steered left in an attempt to avoid the van, and the two vehicles collided, Nein said.
All six people transported for treatment were passengers in the van, Nein said.
More information on the people involved was not immediately available.
Route 32 was shut down to traffic between its intersections with East Pond Road and Washington Road.
Jefferson Fire and Rescue, Waldoboro Fire Department, three ambulances from Waldoboro EMS and an ambulance apiece from Central Lincoln County Ambulance Service and Delta Ambulance all responded to the scene.
Warren Ambulance Service and Boothbay Regional Ambulance Service provided coverage for Waldoboro EMS, Lash said.
“It was a very well-managed scene, [with] a coordinated effort between fire, EMS, and law enforcement,” as well as the Lincoln County Communications Center, Nein said. “Everybody had a job to do, and everybody did it well.”
