After more than seven years at its present location under the Damariscotta River Grill, Shapers Fitness Gym is looking for a new home.
Shapers co-owner Lil Garcia said her landlord has informed her he needs the space and Garcia has been advised to find a new location for her business. Garcia is now asking the community to help in her search for a new home.
“We need to find a 1,000-square-foot space for the gym where the membership would not be disrupted,” she said. The gym is open to its members 24 hours a day, so around-the-clock access is also important, Garcia said.
Since there are many who walk to the gym, an in-town location would be the best fit, if possible, Garcia said. Many of the gym’s members are elderly, so “we would hope it would be on the first floor,” Garcia said.
Shapers was started in 2007 by seven local women in an effort to keep members of the community healthy through exercise. What makes Shapers stand out is the sense of camaraderie that keeps its members coming back, Garia said.
The sense of community and sharing that each individual brings to the gym makes Shapers what it is – a health club for body and mind, Garcia said. Members of Shapers help each other through difficult times, giving comfort and sometimes advice to carry them through and help them to get on with living their lives to the fullest.
In addition to encouraging its members to keep healthy and fit, Shapers has helped the community with its ongoing donations to the Ecumenical Food Pantry, the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, People to People, and the fuel bank, all during September.
Shapers has always donated free weeks and months of workouts to local nonprofits to help their cause in raising funds, Garcia said.
Shapers is currently located at 2 Junes Alley in Damariscotta. Garcia invites anyone with suggestions for a new location for her business to contact her at 563-3030, 563-1721, or shapers@tidewater.net.
