A box truck hit a utility pole on Route 129 in South Bristol just after 1 p.m. today, knocking down wires and causing a widespread power outage in the area of Rutherford Island.
The driver of the truck apparently became distracted, veered off the road, and struck the pole, Maker said. The sheriff’s office has not released the name of the driver.
Power was expected to be out several hours while Central Maine Power Company repairs the damage.
The accident has reduced car traffic to one lane and closed Route 129 to commercial vehicles due to the low-lying wires.
