Now that summer vacation is in full swing, parents who want to keep their children (or themselves) entertained might consider a visit to the Skidompha Second-Hand Book Shop on Elm Street in Damariscotta.
A new display includes about three dozen sci-fi/fantasy books for children, including works by Ursula Le Guin, volumes from Eoin Colfers’ Artemis Fowl series, and some Charlie Bone novels by Jenny Nimmo.
Another recent acquisition for children is a collection of movies on tape, many of them classics.
The shop also offers an assortment of jigsaw puzzles for older children and adults, in addition to its hundreds of children’s books that include something for every age, from toddlers’ board books to young-adult fantasy.
For adults, the shop has books on nearly every topic. New donations in fiction and non-fiction arrive every day. For example, currently a large selection of art books is available, from elegant books about specific artists to how-to books. Special displays change regularly as new offerings come in. The shop also holds unannounced half-price sales every week, with on-sale categories changing weekly.
The Skidompha bookshop is a major fundraiser for the Skidompha Public Library. It offers about 13,000 books – fiction and non-fiction, hardcover and paperback – in dozens of categories. All books are donated, all staff members are volunteers, and all proceeds go to the library.
The bookshop is located in the Red Barn on Elm Street, just up the hill from the library’s back door. It’s open Mon.-Fri., 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sat., 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information call the shop at 563-7807.
