A discarded cigarette butt was probably the cause of a small brush fire outside Hannaford Supermarket in Damariscotta April 22.
The Damariscotta Fire Department was paged out at 2:44 p.m. and quickly extinguished the fire, which burned some bushes in a parking lot median.
Damariscotta 1st Assistant Fire Chief Jon Pinkham said the fire probably started after someone discarded a cigarette into the median.
Store employees noticed the fire and doused it with a fire extinguisher, Assistant Store Manager Nicole Grover said.
