Somerville residents and their guests enjoyed a celebration as the town celebrated its 15th annual Somerville Day, July 21.
Fire trucks from Somerville, Jefferson, and Windsor, the Somerville water rescue boat, State Sen. Chris Johnson, and antique automobiles were just part of the celebration.
Seventy gifts were donated for a raffle to raise funds for beautification of the town. In the past, Somerville Day proceeds have paid for the gazebo on the front lawn of the Somerville School, as well as a marble bench, monument, and red maple tree at that location. One year, funds from the annual celebration helped pay for fireworks.
Donations for the raffle included a hand-carved owl by Elaine Porter, a painting by Sandy Dunlap, hand-made earrings and bracelet by Alice Rafuse, an oil and lube from Sand Hill Garage, Windsor Fair tickets and a number of gift certificates including those from Mazie’s Restaurant, Come Spring Restaurant, Berry & Berry and others.
The Whitefield Lions Club grilled chicken, serving approximately 50 lunch plates of one-half chicken with coleslaw, chips, a cookie and a drink.
“As far as I know they’re going to do it again next year,” Town Clerk Ernestine Peaslee said. “It was wonderful.”
