Somerville Selectman Carolyn Doyle said May 16 that a draft ordinance to regulate the use or possession of consumer fireworks will come before voters, but not in time for the June 12 primary election.
Selectman Martha Staples, a volunteer with the Somerville Fire Department, is coordinating the language of the ordinance with department requests.
In other business, Board Chairwoman Susan Greer was scheduled to meet with RSU 12 Supt. Gregory Potter, May 16, to discuss logistics relating to the town’s continued use of space at the Somerville School.
Doyle said the agreement between the town and the district allows the town to remain in the building as long as necessary. Work continues on the new town office, formerly a portable classroom in Jefferson.
“There wasn’t enough knowledge as to what it would take to get in there,” Doyle said. She said provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act require ramp access and a paved or hard-packed parking lot. A committee of volunteers is looking into the costs to accomplish those tasks.
“We also need to have the water tested,” Doyle said. She said the roof may also need repair.
The next meeting of the Somerville Board of Selectmen is scheduled to begin Tuesday, June 5 at 7 p.m. in the Somerville School gymnasium.
