Somerville selectmen and volunteers were busy, Sept. 25, moving furniture from the old town office, at the former Somerville School, to the new one at 72 Sand Hill Rd.
The Somerville Town Office will open for business at the new location, where selectmen have been meeting since Sept.1.
Modifications have been made to the new office that was originally a temporary classroom in Jefferson. A foundation was poured, creating a full basement and a bathroom and kitchen have been added to the office space. A space heater was installed in the office, but Selectman Susan Greer said the basement is not heated at this time.
“Right now we’re keeping the old town office and keeping our records there,” she said. “We have to work out some problems with moisture in the basement.” She said the concrete is still damp and that an electric heater used last winter was expensive to run. Another space heater might not be a good long-term solution, she said.
Greer said a three-member committee has been appointed to oversee the move.
“They’re looking into the best way to heat the building and cellar,” she said. Meanwhile, a row of southeast-facing windows provide adequate warmth for the early fall days, she said.
Greer said Sen. Chris Johnson, D-Somerville, will present the town with U.S. and Maine flags that have flown over the State House in Augusta.
Earl Landry is building a base for a sign that was sponsored by the Whitefield Lions Club and Somerville Days Committee. A new town seal, designed by local artist Claudia Fujianga, will be unveiled at the next meeting of the Somerville Board of Selectmen, Tues., Oct. 2. That meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the new town office at 72 Sand Hill Rd.
