South Bristol Fire Chief Robert “Mitch” Mitchell will resign at the end of March.
Mitchell, a 23-year veteran of the department, became chief in 2008, stepping in for Mark Carrothers, who resigned to take a job in the United Arab Emirates.
Mitchell served as training officer and assistant chief before his election to the top position in the department. Mitchell’s father-in-law, Thurlow “Sonny” Leeman, served as chief from 1978-2002.
Mitchell said he wants to “take some time to pursue some other interests,” but will “stay on and help out where I can.”
The department has re-elected Carrothers, who returned from the Middle East and has served as the assistant chief for Walpole since November 2010, to succeed Mitchell.
