After a summer of preparations and construction, South Bristol School has launched its new after-school program and hired the program’s first director.
Terry Mitchell, who has worked at SBS as an ed tech for 17 years, oversees the program. The program is funded entirely by a grant from a private donor and is free for students to attend, SBS Principal Scott White said.
The South Bristol School Committee voted unanimously to launch the program during a meeting in June after discussing the possibility of an after-school service during a number of previous meetings.
The program is offered from 2:30-5:30 p.m. each day school is in session. Parents will need to notify the school prior to 10 a.m. if their student will attend the program that day, White said.
The program will take place in and around “Salty’s,” the modular building next to the gym. The school acquired the building last fall. Construction was done over the summer to make the building “student-ready and student-safe,” White said, including the installation of an intercom system and new flooring, as well as electrical work.
Mitchell said she plans to fill the time with a snack, a physical activity or game, and a creativity time, which would include arts and crafts. Students would also have time to complete any homework from the school day.
Parents will be responsible for picking up their students at 5:30 p.m. every day.
