Effective Monday, March 9, the South Bristol Post Office will reduce its retail hours. The office will be open from 8-11 a.m. and noon to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday and 8:30-11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
The change in retail hours is the end result of a process that began in 2011, U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman Melissa Lohnes said. Approximately 3,500 post offices in rural areas across the country were studied for possible closure, Lohnes said.
South Bristol’s post office was one of them. Due to customer surveys, however, the reduction of retail hours was determined to be the best solution for many rural post offices, Lohnes said.
The reduction in retail hours at the South Bristol Post Office will not affect delivery, Lohnes said. Any staff changes caused by the reduction in retail hours will be in compliance with the postal workers union contract, she said.
