South Bristol’s new Town Clerk, Annette Farrin, describes herself as a “people person.”
Her part-time jobs – she’s a bartender, caterer and hairdresser and she sells a line of skin care and cosmetics products – and her generosity as a volunteer provide plenty of opportunity for interaction with the community, Farrin said.
In March 2010, Farrin won election to a three-year term on the South Bristol School Committee, where her daughter, Gretchen, began Kindergarten last fall.
Before Gretchen’s birth, Farrin served on the South Bristol Planning Board. She’s also the Daisy leader for Girl Scout Troop #1677 in South Bristol.
A hairdresser for 25 years, Farrin goes to Cove’s Edge Nursing Home every Tuesday to cut and style hair and she offers in-home service for clients who can’t travel. She’ll return to Coveside Restaurant soon for her fourth summer as a bartender.
Farrin said she enjoys her new position and all her past and present involvement in town government. “I think it’s important for people to be involved with their town and know what’s going on,” she said March 28.
The South Bristol Board of Selectmen appointed Farrin to complete the term of former Town Clerk and Registrar of Voters Mary Jane McLoon after McLoon’s resignation. Farrin started Feb. 1.
“It’s a learning process,” Farrin said of her first weeks in the position. She recently took a course on elections in Portland, oversaw her first election earlier this month and plans to take a vital statistics course soon.
As Town Clerk, her responsibilities include collecting mooring fees, issuing dog licenses and marriage licenses, maintaining records of births and deaths and administering elections.
Farrin’s hours vary somewhat, as the Town Clerk in tiny South Bristol only works about three hours a day, three days per week.
Beginning in late June, after the last day of school, Farrin plans to work 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays and Wednesdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays.
