An unpredictable spring storm is bringing more snowfall to the area than originally forecast, according to the National Weather Service. In fact, forecasting the system was so tricky that the NWS didn’t issue a first advisory until the storm had already arrived in Lincoln County on Saturday morning.
The forecast challenge was in predicting where a well-defined snow line with a highly variable track would establish itself once the weather moved in, which may explain why the NWS had to hold off on issuing a winter weather advisory for Lincoln County until the last minute. Winter weather advisories and winter storm watches had been issued for areas south of Lincoln County on Friday.
The revised forecast calls for up to 6 inches of snowfall in Lincoln County, several inches more than originally forecast. As of 11 a.m. on Saturday, Westport Island was reporting 2.7″ of snowfall accumulation and Bristol was reporting 2.0″, according to a report on WGME.com.
Snowfall should begin to taper off as nightfall approaches and end during the overnight hours, according to present forecasts. The winter weather advisory for Lincoln County is in effect until 6 p.m. on Saturday, according to the NWS.
