Recent sub-freezing temperatures and the subsequent thaw contributed to an early-morning sprinkler-system malfunction at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta Jan. 6.
The sprinkler system in the dining room of the facility activated at about 6:20 a.m., Lincoln County Healthcare spokesman Alan Crowell said.
The Lincoln County Healthcare facilities team thinks a sprinkler head froze during the recent cold spell and, as the sprinkler head thawed, the system kicked on, Crowell said.
The system only activated in the dining room, and the water only affected the dining room and a common area nearby, he said.
“No resident areas were affected,” Crowell said. “We did relocate breakfast to the activities room this morning. As far as we know, most of (the residents) didn’t even know it was happening.”
The Damariscotta Fire Department and the Cove’s Edge maintenance staff cleaned up the water, and, as of 8:30 a.m., the carpet was almost dry, Crowell said. The water did not cause any permanent damage.
Cove’s Edge Inc., at 26 Schooner St. in Damariscotta, provides long-term and nursing care, as well as rehabilitative services like physical therapy. The nonprofit is a subsidiary of Lincoln County Healthcare.
