According to some Westport Island residents, a storm, seconds in duration, occurred on the island Aug. 3 in the early evening, felling numerous trees and causing property damage.
Donna Curry on the Main Road on the island said, “The electricity had already gone off, and I was running around finding lanterns because it was getting dark in the house even though it was still light outside, around 7:30. Then the rain came and I heard a whoosh sound, and I heard tinkling against the windows.”
As she ran to get buckets for water coming through the vents from the attic, Curry saw limbs all over her deck and in front of her sunroom window. Branches and limbs were everywhere, she said. Because the soil on her property is shallow at least 15, 30- to 40- foot trees came down, she said.
Gerry Bodmer, her next door neighbor, said that kayaks were thrown from his property into the water. “It’s thousands of dollars in damages for some people,” he said.
George Richardson, Jr., who has lived on Westport Island his entire life, said he hadn’t known of such sudden storms before about four or five years ago when he suddenly started noticing them.
The amount of damage is not enough for FEMA, he said, just the insurance companies.
