Starting Monday, July 14, join Cynthia Simonds for two exciting swing dance classes upstairs at Rising Tide Community Market in the new FARMS Community Kitchen space.
The Beginner Swing Sampler, 6:30-7:30 p.m., is where dancers will find partner connection with a taste of East Coast Swing, Lindy Hop and Charleston.
Stay for Lindy Hop 101 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. to learn all about Swing Outs, Lindy Circles, Tandem Charleston and variations to get out on the dance floor with confidence.
The five week class session will run Mondayd, from July 14 to Aug. 18. No partner is necessary as students will all dance and learn together. Beginners welcome. Dancers should bring a change of shoes- hard soled or suede soled shoes work well, so, they can slide on the floor and keep their knees safe.
Simonds is the President of the Mainiac Swing Dance Society and coordinates the MSDS’ Swing Dance at the Woodfords Club in Portland from September through June.
“We have dancers of all ages,” she said. “There are teenagers and college students all the way through my dance partner who is 87 in our club. We want to spread the gospel of swing.”
Simonds adapts the swing dance moves to meet everyone’s ability. Classes are held in the open FARMS Community Kitchen located upstairs above the Rising Tide Coop; making it easy for dancers to grab a snack before class to keep hydrated and energized.
Each class is $12 per session or $50 for the series. For more information, email portcityswingdance@gmail.com or call 563-8632. Registration online is open via email or Facebook.
