The RSU 12 Board of Directors voted unanimously to appoint Deb Taylor as the new Wiscasset High School Principal at their regular meeting Sept. 9.
Taylor had been serving as the school’s interim principal since former Principal Matt Carlson stepped down earlier this year.
A Wiscasset High School alum herself, Taylor is a long time resident of Wiscasset and has a son in the school system. Prior to being made principal, Taylor served as assistant principal under Carlson. She became assistant principal after nine years as a French and Spanish teacher. On top of her duties as principal, Taylor still serves as the school’s Athletic Director.
Taylor steps into the WHS’ top position at a busy time for the school. WHS is currently in the middle of accreditation by the New England Association of School and Colleges (NEASC) and a professional development initiative called “Take One!”
NEASC accreditation is an intensive two-year process that serves as a self study for what the school is doing well and where it needs to improve. The school goes through the process every 10 years.
“We have a lot on our plate,” Taylor said.
Her job is made more complicated by the absence of an assistant principal, a position still vacant after her promotion.
Wiscasset High School is currently in the process of fulfilling the position.
