Paula Roberts’ shot won top honors for sports photo at the Maine Press Association Better Newspaper Contest. “Of all the entries, this one caught our attention immediately,” the judges said. “It has nice peak action coupled with great reaction from the players.” |
The staff of The Lincoln County News collected 16 awards in the 2014 Maine Press Association Better Newspaper Contest, including top honors in eight categories.
The Lincoln County News competes in the division of the contest for the state’s biggest weekly newspapers.
Dominik Lobkowicz took home the Bob Drake Young Writer’s Award
and seven individual awards, half of the newspaper’s total haul.
Editor Sherwood Olin received two awards for editorial writing. Olin won first-place honors for “On the Precipice,” an editorial about Maine’s Freedom of Access Act
and third place honors for “Move the Question,” about his decision to cease publication of letters to the editor on the topic of abortion.
Sports Editor Paula Roberts took first place for sports photo for the second consecutive year.
Glenn Chadbourne took first place as the top editorial cartoonist for any weekly in the state, as the judges considered entries from both large and small weekly
newspapers for this category.
Former LCN reporter Kathy Onorato took first place for feature story for “Wiscasset teen enjoying life after leukemia battle,” about Cainin Griffin’s successful
fight against the disease.
The awards showcase the long-standing reputation of The Lincoln County News as one of the pre-eminent weekly newspapers in Maine, as well as the hard work and
talent of its staff, according to Olin.
“I am incredibly proud of my staff,” Olin said. “The whole crew from top to bottom: my deputy editor, J.W. Oliver; Dominik Lobkowicz, Paula Roberts, Kathy Onorato,
Charlotte Boynton. Seriously, it’s a great team, and it’s nice to see the MPA recognize their work.”
