Unofficial reports of a three car, tractor-trailer truck accident on the Wiscasset bridge indicated non-life threatening injuries to motorists involved in the crash around 1 p.m. today.
Wiscasset Police Chief John Allen said he could not comment on the details of the accident, as emergency personnel were waiting for state police to investigate the scene.
The crash, which involved two cars, a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer truck, locked up traffic for many hours as emergency personnel from multiple departments responded, some directly to the scene and others at key intersections to reroute motorists along the Rt. 1 corridor.
A tractor-trailer truck collided with a gray Massachusetts vehicle in the southbound lane on the Wiscasset side of the bridge, closest to the railroad tracks. A maroon pickup truck hauling a trailer collided with a maroon station wagon in the northbound lane in the same incident on the Rt. 1 bridge.
Motorists were asked to turn around at the bridge. Emergency personnel rerouted traffic at the intersection of the Sheepscot Road and Rt. 1 in Newcastle, as well as at the intersection of Routes 27 and 1.
Emergency personnel responding to the scene and to mutual aid included Newcastle Fire Dept., Wiscasset Fire Dept., Wiscasset Police, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Medical Service personnel.
Further information on the accident in Wiscasset will be posted in The Lincoln County News as soon as it becomes available, online and in the next print edition on newsstands July 30.
