A Waldoboro artist who was known for turning trash into treasures was featured on the “Today” show Tuesday, Dec. 30.
Nathan Nicholls, who died unexpectedly in July at 52, was a well-known artist and sculptor who used recycled items to make his art.
The feature starts with Nicholls’ grandchildren leading reporter Bob Dotson through the 5 acres of land surrounding Nicholls’ Waldoboro home. Hidden in the forest around the home are hundreds of whimsical sculptures.
Nicholls’ grandchildren showed Dotson the sculptures their grandfather left for them to find. The children of the late artist also appeared, reminiscing about their father and the legacy he left behind.
“Everybody else looks up in the clouds and says, ‘Oh, that cloud looks like a dragon,'” son Josh said. “My dad looked down at the ground and said, ‘That wrench looks like a monkey.'”
