Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies Matt Day and Justin Drake responded to an early morning tractor trailer accident on Rt. 1 in Newcastle, which closed the area to vehicular traffic until 6:23 a.m. Tuesday.
According to LCSO Lt. Rand Maker, the two-vehicle non-injury accident was logged in at 3:40 a.m., with Dep. Matt Day the primary officer on the scene.
Reportedly, a 2009 Sterling 18-wheel tractor trailer was traveling northbound on Rt. 1, when driver Donald Doyle, 35, of Poland, lost control of the vehicle, went over the center line and jack-knifed, coming to rest against the northbound guardrail.
The second vehicle involved, a 1999 Plymouth driven by Randall Keach, 28, of Woolwich was unable to avoid hitting the truck and sustained $3000 in damage.
“According to Day’s report,” said Maker, “the tractor trailer looks like it is in bad shape with $20,000 in damage.”
Reading Day’s report, Maker said the deputies attribute the accident to road conditions, specifically black ice. “I talked to him [Day] and he said the temp was balmy, and then it dropped fairly quickly.”
Based on his experience, Maker said there are two local towing companies that have the capacity to remove large trucks, Sol’s Trucking in Waldoboro, and another service in Bath. Moving such a vehicle takes hours. Maker believes the Sterling truck was removed in two different stages.
