Troop 216 Star Scout Madison Bickford Allen, of Jefferson, was recognized by the National Court of Honor of Boy Scouts of America and presented with The Medal of Merit at a
Court of Honor Saturday, Nov. 8. The award was presented “for outstanding service in implementing Scout skills and ideals.”
After arriving at Jefferson Village School early Nov. 22, 2013, Allen and his mother Cindy became aware there was a fire in a stove at the school. Allen, a seventh-
grader at the time, went down the hall and into all the rooms, notifying teachers that there was a fire in the building.
“On behalf of the National Council, Boy Scouts of America, I hereby convene this special Court of Honor for the purpose of awarding the Medal of Merit to Madison
Bickford Allen,” Pine Tree Council Counselor Advancement Chair Susan Kennedy said during the ceremony at the First Baptist Church in Jefferson, Troop 216’s sponsoring
organization.
“The National Council of the Boys Scouts of America presents four awards to outstanding Scouts or Scouters who have rendered special service to others,” Kennedy
said. “The Medal of Merit may be awarded to a youth member or adult leader who has performed some outstanding act of service of a rare or exceptional character that reflects an
uncommon degree of concern for the well-being of others.
“All of these awards are presented in the name of the Boy Scouts of America. In order for a Scout to be honored with such an award, application must be made and
approved by the BSA’s National Court of Honor. It is in their behalf that I call this portion of the ceremony this evening to make this award.”
Kennedy presented the Medal of Merit plaque to Madison’s mother, Cindy, who then presented it to her son. Kennedy then asked Madison’s father to pin the Medal of
Merit on his son’s uniform.
Earlier in the Court of Honor, Allen and Nick Huber were recognized for achieving the rank of Star Scout. Numerous merit badges were awarded to several Scouts.
