A six-hour standoff on the Upper East Pond Road in Nobleboro ended peacefully Nov. 1, with two local men arrested.
Lincoln County Sheriff Todd Brackett said the incident began when deputies responded to a loud noise complaint at a private residence at 204 Upper East Pond Rd., around 1:53 a.m. Things were fairly quiet when deputies arrived, Brackett said.
As the deputies were preparing to leave the scene, a woman came out of the house and informed them one of the residents, Kody Wallace, age 19, had threatened another person with a knife.
According to a press release from Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Special Services Supervisor Lieutenant Michael J. Murphy, deputies were investigating that complaint when Wallace threatened to shoot the deputies before locking himself back inside the home. No firearm was displayed at this time, however persons who had been inside the home confirmed there was a firearm inside.
A second subject, Thomas Powell, 21, of Friendship, stayed inside the home with Wallace.
The deputies pulled back to a more secure position and with use of a public address system attempted to convince the men to exit the home. The neighboring homes were evacuated and the road was shut down for the course of the incident.
After a few hours without success, the Maine State Police Tactical Team was contacted for assistance. During this time, deputies learned both men had outstanding warrants for failing to appear on previous theft charges.
After the arrival of the tactical team and State Police negotiators, a few more hours passed before the situation was resolved with both men exiting the home and surrendering to the awaiting officers.
Wallace, who lives at the residence, was arrested on the outstanding warrant and also charged with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon.
Powell was arrested on the outstanding warrant.
Both men were transported by deputies to the Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset.
A shotgun, ammunition and large hunting knife were seized at the scene.
The investigation is ongoing and more charges are possible pending review by the District Attorney’s Office.
Lt. Murphy said he expects the DA’s office to determine any new charges later this week. “He (Wallace) allegedly threatened a person in the house and a deputy,” Murphy said. “There is also a charge of creating a standoff.”
Murphy said Powell was not an active participant and that there were not any additional charges against him at this time.
A spokesman for Two Bridges Regional said Powell was arrested for violating the conditions of release on previous charges related to a theft and a warrant for failing to appear. He was released on a sentence agreement for time served.
Bail for Wallace was set at $1100 for the Class D terrorizing charge and $10,000 for the Class C charge of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and the Maine State Police Tactical Team were assisted at the scene by the Damariscotta and Waldoboro Police Departments and the Nobleboro Fire Department.
