Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the recent theft a truck from a Waldoboro gas station. The story garnered attention when it was discovered that the victim’s dog was in the truck when it was stolen.
George, an American bulldog, is fine and has returned to his family. The truck was found in Massachusetts, and has also been returned. “They got their dog back, they got their truck back, and the only thing wrong with the truck was that it had run out of gas,” said Waldoboro Police Chief Bill Labombarde.
Both suspects in the theft have now been arrested: Appolonia Michaud, 25, of Bristol, was arrested in the Ellsworth area on June 30. Jason Hunter, 27, of Bristol, was arrested by York County Sheriff’s Deputies on July 17.
Michaud has been charged with theft, violating conditions of release and operating while her license was under suspension. Hunter has been charged with theft.
They are alleged to have had Michaud’s two children with them at the time of the theft. Police believe they put the kids in the back of the truck with the dog and drove south.
The dog was found abandoned in Bath several days later. Michaud’s mother picked up the children in Massachusetts and reported the location of the truck to police, Labombarde said. Michaud’s mother is currently caring for the children, he said.
“She’s a standup lady, and she did the right thing,” Labombarde said of the children’s grandmother.
