The programs department at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset is pleased to have made a second donation of afghans, small quilts and teddy bears to the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital in Portland. The sewing class and crochet class have been hard at work creating items to donate.
The crochet program has been in operation for the past three years, making hats, scarves, mittens, afghans and small toys to donate to charities. Even the less than perfect afghans are not wasted but are given to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter for use in pet cages. The biggest donation time is at Christmas when all the items are given to local organizations to distribute.
The sewing class has been in operation for about a year and a half and basic sewing skills are taught.
The jail has been fortunate to have Rebecca Townsend, Mary Rand, Judy Seredynski and Diane Zyskowski from Clam Shell Quilters volunteer once a month to teach quilting. The class has also sewn fleece bears and other animals to donate.
The women who attend these classes learn basic skills that they can take with them and share with their families. They also take a great deal of satisfaction in feeling that they are helping someone else.
Programs Officer Sue Sutter said, “As the teacher of the classes I take great satisfaction in seeing the smile on their faces when they master a new stitch or finish their first quilt and realize they can do it. We are always happy to take donations of yarn and cotton or flannel fabric that can be turned into quilts.”
