Local police are investigating a rash of thefts of manhole covers from numerous streets in Augusta over the last week.
Two people have been charged in the case, according to Augusta Police Lt. Kevin Lully.
Jordan Achorn of Jefferson has been charged with felony theft and Dustin Matthews of Gardiner has also been charged with felony theft, along with violating conditions of release, Lully said.
Police had received numerous calls last week regarding the stolen manhole covers, several of which have been located and recovered, according to Lully.
Manholes without covers create a risk of injury and damage if hit by motorists or cyclists, Lully said. The Greater Augusta Utilities District worked to replace them in an effort to prevent injury.
Anyone with further information on other people involved or the whereabouts of missing covers should contact Augusta police at 626-2370.
