Two separate accidents in Waldoboro Dec. 23 resulted in drivers being charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, according to the Waldoboro Police Department.
The first accident occurred just after 2 p.m. when Laila Ata, 47, of Waldoboro, was operating a 1998 Subaru southbound on Route 1, according to Officer Larry Hesseltine.
Ata made a left-hand turn onto West Main Street near Ralph’s Home Sales, into the path of a northbound 2014 Subaru operated by James Auslander, 58, of Bay City, Mich.
Auslander’s vehicle “T-boned” Ata’s vehicle, according to Hesseltine. Ata’s was the offending vehicle, however, for failing to yield the right of way, according to Chief Bill Labombarde.
Ata allegedly blew a 0.20 percent breath alcohol content at the police station, Hesseltine said. Hesseltine arrested Ata for operating under the influence and released her on personal recognizance bail.
Auslander’s vehicle sustained an estimate $6,000 to $7,000 in damage; Ata’s vehicle sustained an estimated $3,000 to $4,000 damage, and may have been totaled, Hesseltine said.
Everyone involved was wearing seat belts, and no air bags deployed, Hesseltine said.
In the second accident, Maura Diprete, 58, of Camden, was southbound on Route 1 in a 2006 Ford Taurus.
According to Labombarde, at about 8 p.m. Diprete veered right and struck the end of a guard rail near Wink’s Auto Service, ricocheted across the road and struck the guard rail on the northbound side.
Diprete was transported to a hospital after the accident, but Labombarde was unable to say which hospital she was taken to.
Officer John Lash was the investigating officer, Officers Thomas Bartunek and Chris Spear also responded to the scene.
Diprete was issued a summons for operating under the influence, and results of a blood test are pending, according to Hesseltine.
