Traffic was reduced to a single lane on Vannah Road in Nobleboro as the Nobleboro and Damariscotta fire departments, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and Central Lincoln County Ambulance Service responded to a report that individuals had fallen through the ice on Damariscotta Lake. The page came at approximately 5:14 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 1, Nobleboro Fire Chief Ryan Gallagher said.
Firefighters from Nobleboro and Damariscotta traveled ¾ of a mile out on Damariscotta Lake to investigate an anonymous tip to the sheriff’s office, Gallagher said.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Brendan Kane said firefighters found two abandoned vehicles. They were able to establish that no one had fallen through the ice.
Two trucks had gotten stuck in the slushy ice layered on top of thicker ice on Damariscotta Lake, Kane said. Norman Palmer, of Damariscotta, was identified as the owner of one of the trucks. The owner of the other vehicle had not yet been identified, Kane said.
Kane said he believed the trucks’ owners had arranged for the vehicles to be removed from the lake Monday, Feb. 2. Kane said removal of the vehicles from the lake is under the purview of the Maine Warden Service. Kane was preparing to clear the scene at approximately 6:15 p.m.
