United States Marshals arrested a man in Nobleboro Feb. 7 who is wanted in New Bedford, Mass., for allegedly raping a juvenile family member.
According to Detective Sgt. Matt Rayner, of the New Bedford Police Department, Jeffrey Alexander Glover, 46, is wanted for three counts of rape of a child under 16.
Rayner said the alleged victim is a family member of Glover’s, but was unable to share any further details.
According to a press release from the U.S. Marshals Service, Glover’s arrest was the culmination of an intense three-day search in Massachusetts, New York, and Maine.
Several arrest attempts were made by marshals and New York Police Department officers from Feb. 5 to Feb. 7, and on several occasions Glover avoided arrest by “mere hours,” according to the release.
Glover was known to have extensive ties to Maine, and information developed in New York revealed he was traveling with a new girlfriend who lives in Nobleboro, according to the release.
After he was arrested following a felony traffic stop by marshals assigned to the Maine Violent Offender Task Force, Glover was taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail where he was being held on a fugitive from justice charge.
Whether or not Glover was aware he was being pursued is not yet clear.
The press release from the marshals service says he “fled” Massachusetts, and it is believed “the couple departed New York City due to pressure from law enforcement officers who were pursuing them.”
Rayner, however, does not believe Glover had knowledge the police were looking for him and said New Bedford Police asked for assistance in the arrest just because Glover was out of state.
“To my knowledge, I don’t believe he was running to escape us,” Rayner said.
Glover has lived in both Maine and New Bedford, but law enforcement officials were not sure of his current residence.
Glover has a history of violent crime in Maine including convictions for robbery and domestic assault, but he was also given a commendation for helping the Lewiston Police Department rescue a disable elderly man in 2004.
According to Detective Sgt. Brian O’Malley, of the Lewiston Police Department, on Oct. 15, 2004, Glover received a commendation coin from a patrol officer for helping the patrolman carry the elderly man out of a burning building at 308 Lisbon St.
Glover was charged and convicted of robbing a Big Apple convenience store just months after receiving the commendation. Claiming he had a firearm, Glover stole money and the video cassette recorder recording customers in the store, according to O’Malley. No gun was ever displayed or found, he said.
Glover was sentenced to eight years in prison with all but 18 months suspended, two years probation, and $700 in restitution, according to Androscoggin County Superior Court staff.
However, Glover did not show up to serve his sentence and, according to O’Malley, a warrant was issued for failure to appear for execution of Department of Corrections sentence. Media reports indicate Glover later turned himself in.
Glover served an eight-month sentence for a 2005 conviction of domestic assault on a girlfriend concurrently with the robbery sentence, O’Malley said.
“There was no sexual assaults or anything like that,” O’Malley said of the department’s dealings with Glover.
