Officers with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office broke up an underage drinking party on Thompsons Hill Road on Southport Island Feb. 8 around 11:30 p.m.
Seventeen teenagers have been identified, 11 of whom may be student-athletes at Boothbay Region High School.
Eleven juveniles and one adult, Jared Spofford, 18, of Boothbay, have or will be charged with possession of alcohol by a minor, or possession by consumption, according to LCSO Lt. Rand Maker.
The owner(s) of the residence, where the party took place were not home at the time of the incident, and will not be charged, according to Maker. The juvenile who hosted the party will be charged.
Boothbay Region High School athletic director Allan Crocker would not comment on whether any high school athletes were involved, referring all questions to AOS 98 Superintendent Eileen King.
King issued a prepared statement, saying Boothbay-Boothbay Harbor Community School District administrators are investigating alleged violations of the BRHS athletic pledge.
“At this time it is reported that 11 student athletes are in violation of the athletic pledge and have been suspended from all activities associated with the program,” King said. “The length of suspension will vary in some cases if there were prior offenses. Some player suspensions have been issued while other cases are awaiting more information. Due to confidentiality laws regarding minors, no further information is available at this time.”
BRHS varsity boys coach IJ Pinkham confirmed that he will bringing up some players from the junior varsity team to fill his roster at the state tournament.
