Local emergency officials have identified the Bristol man who was shot in the woods outside his Upper Round Pond Road home yesterday as Gil Jaeger.
Jaeger remains at Maine Medical Center in fair condition, a hospital spokeswoman said this morning.
A retired oyster farmer, Jaeger is a captain with the Bristol Fire Department. He was an assistant chief for 25 years and received the Chief Bob Maxcy Lifetime Achievement Award for his service in 2011.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting are not clear. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office has released few details as it continues to investigate. Detective Robert McFetridge is the investigating officer.
The wounded man reported the incident at 10:35 a.m., telling Lincoln County Communications “he had been shot when he entered the woods near his home after hearing several gunshots in the area,” according to a Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office press release.
LCSO deputies “believe they have identified all the subjects involved,” according to the press release.
LCSO has not released any names and declined to confirm or deny the identity of the man who was shot.
A Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife spokesman said the incident was not a hunting accident and referred further comment to LCSO.
Central Lincoln County Ambulance initially transported the man to Miles Memorial Hospital, according to the LCSO press release, issued at 5:09 p.m. Oct. 18.
Bristol Fire and Rescue and the Maine Warden Service also assisted LCSO.
