A six hour standoff on the Upper East Pond Road in Nobleboro ended peacefully Friday after two men surrendered to law enforcement.
According to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Kody Wallace, 19, of Nobleboro, and Thomas Powell, 21, of Friendship, were both arrested on outstanding warrants, following the standoff. Wallace was additionally charged with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon.
Lincoln County Sheriff Todd Brackett said the incident began when deputies responded to a loud noise complaint at a private residence at 204 Upper East Pond Rd., around 1:53 a.m. Things were fairly quiet when deputies arrived, Brackett said. As the deputies were preparing to leave the scene, a woman came out of the house and told them there was a man inside the residence with a knife, Brackett said.
An LCSO press release states were told the man, subsequently identified as Wallace, allegedly threatened another person with a knife.
While the deputies were investigating the threatening complaint, Wallace threatened to shoot the deputies before locking himself back inside the home. Deputies did not see a firearm displayed at this time, however individuals who had been inside the home confirmed there was a firearm inside, according to the LCSO.
Powell stayed inside the home with Wallace.
The deputies pulled back to a more secure position and, with use of a PA system, attempted to convince the men to exit the home. The neighboring homes were evacuated and the road was shut down for the course of the incident, according to the LCSO.
After a few hours without success, the Maine State Police Tactical Team was contacted for assistance. During this time, deputies learned both men had outstanding warrants for failing to appear on previous theft charges.
After the arrival of the Tactical Team and State Police negotiators, a few more hours passed before the situation was resolved with both men exiting the home and surrendering to the awaiting officers.
Both men were transported by Deputies to the Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset.
A shotgun, ammunition and large hunting knife were seized at the scene, , according to the LCSO.
The investigation is ongoing and more charges are possible pending review by the District Attorney’s Office.
The LCSO and the Maine State Police Tactical Team were assisted by the Damariscotta and Waldoboro Police Departments and the Nobleboro Fire Dept.
