The U.S. Postal Service will host a community input meeting on the potential closing of the Chamberlain Post Office tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Bristol Town Office.
Jim McCartney, post office review coordinator for the Portland district, will moderate the meeting, at which Postal Service officials will explain the agency’s proposal and gather feedback.
The input the Postal Service receives will be “factored into the ultimate decision to either close or let things remain as they are,” Postal Service spokesman Tom Rizzo said.
The meeting is part of a 60-day proposal and public notification period. At the end of the 60 days, the Portland district will make a recommendation to Postal Service headquarters in Washington, D.C.
The national headquarters will make a decision within 1-2 weeks. If the Postal Service decides to close the Chamberlain office, it would post its decision at the office, which would close 60 days after the posting.
Chamberlain residents would have 30 days from the date of posting to appeal the decision to the Postal Regulatory Commission, which would have 120 days to rule on the appeal.
