Wiscasset is falling behind in its bid to be named one of America’s “Ten Coolest Small Towns,” and the only way to save the effort is for as many people as possible to register their votes before the contest ends Fri., Feb. 11, according to Wiscasset Town Manager Laurie Smith.
Recognition as one of America’s “Ten Coolest Small Towns” could prove to be a boon to Wiscasset and surrounding areas because the contest is hosted by Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travel, a nationally circulated magazine published by Newsweek. Such recognition would bring a great deal of attention to the area.
As of Feb. 7, that recognition was still just over 300 votes away as Wiscasset has slipped into 11th place with 7814 votes, just behind Greensburg, Kansas with 8135.
Wiscasset had been holding the line at No. 10 for some time, but Greensburg was able to gain the votes to slip into the top 10 over the weekend.
“Now is the time to start pushing our way back into that 10th place spot, or even higher,” said Smith. “We only have a few days to do it!”
In order to vote, visit the Budget Travel website at www.budgettravel.com/bt-srv/coolestsmalltowns/CST2011.html. Once there, choose Wiscasset from the map and then cast a ballot. Voting will continue until Feb. 11 and the rules allow individuals to vote every five hours, according to Smith.
The Lincoln County News website will continue to follow the progress of Wiscasset in America’s “Ten Coolest Small Towns” and post updates here as they become available.
