Convicted sex offender Gregory Vrooman was sentenced to five years in prison, with all but 21 months suspended, in Lincoln County Superior Court Monday afternoon.
Following incarceration, Vrooman must serve four years probation and participate in sex offender counseling.
Vrooman, 46, of Nobleboro, had served as a Maine State Trooper for 26 years when he was arrested in late 2010.
Following a brief trial, he was found guilty of four counts of felony unlawful sexual contact with a minor, four counts of misdemeanor unlawful sexual touching with a minor, and four counts of misdemeanor assault. He was acquitted of one count of tampering with a witness April 13.
In court June 25, Assistant Attorney General Deborah Cashman requested Vrooman serve consecutive sentences for the 12 counts on which he was convicted, but Lincoln County Superior Court Justice Jeffrey Hjelm said mitigating circumstances influenced his decision.
In addition to the sentence for the four counts of unlawful sexual contact with a minor (Class C crime), Vrooman was sentenced to 364 days for eight counts of the Class D crime of unlawful sexual touching. Those sentences are to be served concurrently.
Vrooman will also pay cash fines on four counts of assault and victims fees on all 12 criminal counts.
Following sentencing, Vrooman was released on $25,000 unsecured bail, based on his announced intention to appeal the verdict to the Supreme Judicial Court.
Bail conditions include restrictions against Vrooman having any direct or indirect contact with his victim, her mother or brother, or two witnesses in the case against him.
He may not have contact of any kind with any girl under the age of 18 and is not allowed in Bath or any municipality adjoining Bath, the city in which his victim and her family live.
Vrooman is also prohibited from possessing dangerous weapons or pornographic materials of any kind and will be subject to random searches.
Hjelm said he was allowing bail in order to ensure that Vrooman would have access to the full appeals process.
