The death of a 19-year-old Waldoboro man last July was caused by accidental drowning, according to a State Medical Examiner’s report.
Ian Sanborn was reported missing July 26, 2009 after family members had not heard from him, according to the Maine Warden Service. A Marine Patrol pilot found Sanborn’s body around 4 p.m. later the same day in an area of Broad Cove known locally as Bug-Tussle, near where he had been clam digging with a friend.
The friend, a juvenile, told investigators he left the scene after he finished digging with Sanborn. According to Marine Warden Service spokesperson Deborah Turcotte, Sanborn told his friend he wanted to rest before leaving the flats.
The pair had started digging in the area very early Friday morning, July 25, according to Waldoboro Police. Family members called patrolman and shellfish warden Bill Bragg around noon Saturday after Sanborn had not returned from digging.
The medical examiner’s report was finalized Jan. 27, but the results were held until the family could be notified.
The official cause of death is accidental drowning, and no foul play is suspected, according to the medical examiner’s report.
