Flamingos have recently descended on several Waldoboro lawns. The unsuspecting homes are the target of the latest Waldoboro Fire Dept. fundraiser.
A sign next to the pink plastic birds reads, “You’ve been flocked! Waldoboro Fire Dept.,” and a card informs the homeowner that they can have the birds moved to another lawn for a $20 donation to the fire department.
The department got the idea for the fundraiser from a department in Philadelphia, said Assistant Fire Chief Bill Maxwell. “We’ve had a lot of calls and emails about it already,” Maxwell said.
Anyone can have their friends or neighbors flocked for $20, and the flamingos will be crossing town and county lines, Maxwell said.
The fundraiser supports the Waldoboro Fire Dept., the Waldoboro Firemen’s Association, and the department’s 175th anniversary celebration in 2013.
In addition to the flamingos, to support the 175th anniversary, the department is holding an auction on Friday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m. at Medomak Middle School. Don Carrigan will serve as celebrity host.
The department has big plans for the 2013 celebration – including a parade, concert and carnival – and the auction is one of a series of fundraisers.
Assistant Fire Chief Bill Maxwell has been sending emails and gathering donated items for the auction since June. As of Nov. 14, they had 161 items, including dozens of items autographed by national celebrities.
The Waldoboro Ladies Auxiliary will host a bean supper at Medomak Middle School the evening of the auction starting at 6 p.m. The auction starts at 7 p.m. Patrons not attending the supper are encouraged to arrive by 6:30 p.m. to register.
