A Waldoboro man faces charges of failure to report an accident and operating after revocation after flipping a car on Wagner Bridge Road Oct. 18.
Derick J. Winslow, 25, was driving a 2005 Honda sedan on Wagner Bridge Road in Waldoboro at about 4 p.m. when the vehicle rolled over and came to rest on its roof in a ditch on the northbound side of the road.
According to an affidavit by Waldoboro Police Department Sgt. Jamie Wilson, a witness saw a young man wearing a dark hoodie run from the vehicle, cross the street, and enter a swamp.
Wilson found a man meeting the description in the swamp, “wet up to his chest” and moving away from the scene of the accident, according to the affidavit. The man said he had not been in an accident and was tracking deer.
His eyes were “bloodshot and glassy” and Wilson could smell alcohol on his breath, according to the affidavit. The man would not identify himself to police.
He was subsequently brought to a waiting ambulance, where he identified himself to emergency medical workers before being transported to LincolnHealth – Miles Campus in Damariscotta and subsequently to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset.
According to jail paperwork, Winslow was under the influence of alcohol and Suboxone at the time of his arrest.
Information about Winslow’s direction of travel or other factors in the crash were not available.
Jail paperwork and the Waldoboro Police Department’s weekly news release indicate Winslow was arrested for class C operating after habitual offender revocation, a felony; class D operating under the influence; and class E failure to report an accident.
The complaint in Winslow’s court file, however, only lists class D operating after revocation and class E failure to report an accident, both misdemeanors.
Winslow is free on bail. His bail conditions prohibit the operation of “any motor vehicle under any circumstances,” prohibit the possession or use of alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs, and subject him to random searches and tests. He must also abide by the terms of a contract with Maine Pretrial Services.
He has a court date at the Lincoln County Courthouse at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 14.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Waldoboro Emergency Medical Services, and the Waldoboro Fire Department assisted the Waldoboro Police Department at the accident scene.
