The Waldoboro Board of Selectmen have scheduled a public hearing to discuss a potential townwide vote in November on whether to adopt pay-as-you-throw at the Waldoboro Transfer Station.
The public hearing about pay-as-you-throw was set for Tuesday, Aug. 16.
Traditional waste disposal systems involve residents paying for waste management via property taxes or a transfer station fee, whereas pay-as-you-throw requires residents to pay for the amount of waste they throw away.
Waldoboro Selectman Bob Butler said the Waldoboro Transfer Station Committee had voted for a second time to refer the discussion about pay-as-you-throw to the selectmen so a public hearing could be set.
“We want to get it out there, talk about it, and see which way the wind blows,” Butler said.
The municipalities of Cushing and Friendship, whose residents also utilize the Waldoboro Transfer Station, will be informed of the public hearing so they can partake in the discussion.
Butler said he hopes a nonprofit with experience in the pay-as-you-throw method will be able to address the public hearing to provide residents with information on the topic.
