The Waldoboro Smoke Shop is relocating a short distance north on Route 1 to a vacant commercial building across from Moody’s Diner and formerly home to the Chinese restaurant Chen’s Village.
The smoke shop, owned by the corporate chain Cigaret Shopper, moved out of its location at 1411 Atlantic Highway in Waldoboro on Sunday, Jan. 10.
The shop will reopen in 60-90 days at its new location at 25 Washington St. in Waldoboro, near the intersection of Route 1 and Route 220 (Washington Road). The store is leasing the space.
Cigaret Shopper Human Resource Manager Beth Kimsey said the store’s new location will offer customers an improved shopping experience.
“There will be plenty of improvements at the new location,” Kimsey said.
She said the company was interested in remaining close to its previous location and was excited to be able to move operations to a nearby location on the same busy roadway.
“We wanted to stay on Route 1 and we wanted to stay in Waldoboro,” Kimsey said.
Kimsey said the property at 1411 Atlantic Highway was sold to the neighboring Hannaford Supermarket, whose plans for the newly acquired property led to the smoke shop’s transfer of operations.
The Waldoboro Planning Board unanimously approved Hannaford’s site plan review for expanding the Waldoboro location during a meeting in June 2015.
The project looks to expand the existing 12,350 square-foot store by 6,400 feet, according to planning board documents.
Kimsey said Cigaret Shopper’s Thomaston location will be open to customers in the interim.
“We want to make sure people are aware they can visit our store in Thomaston,” Kimsey said.
Cigaret Shopper’s Knox County location is at 169 New County Rd. in Thomaston.
