A traffic collision on Rt. 1 in Waldoboro June 8 took the life of a 70-year-old woman and sent three other people to area hospitals.
Lois Sparks of Portland was in the back seat of a northbound pick-up truck driven by her son, Murray, when tragedy struck Friday. Murray’s wife Joely, 44, was in the passenger seat.
According to the Waldoboro Police Dept., the accident occurred after a southbound SUV, driven by Marie Tysinger of Waldoboro, “drifted into the northbound lane” and collided head-on with the Sparks family.
Tysinger was the only occupant of her vehicle. What caused 67-year-old Tysinger to allegedly drift into the opposing lane of traffic is still under investigation.
Lois Sparks “succumbed to her injuries at the scene” according to the Waldoboro Police Dept.
Tysinger and Murray Sparks, 45, were transported to Miles Memorial Hospital by Waldoboro EMS; Tysinger was later transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland, according to the Waldoboro Police Dept. Murray Sparks was treated for his injuries and released from Miles Memorial Hospital, according to the Waldoboro Police Dept.
Joely Sparks, 44, was transported to Penobscot Bay Medical Center by Waldoboro EMS and later transported Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, according to the Waldoboro Police Dept.
Sparks and Tysinger were suffering from “non-life threatening injuries” according to Waldoboro Police Chief Bill Labombarde.
A Lincoln County Sheriffs Deputy and Maine State Police accident reconstruction specialist also responded to the scene. Rt. 1 was closed for approximately three hours while the initial accident investigation and reconstruction were performed. The accident remains under investigation at press time.
