A Warren man was indicted for aggravated assault by a Lincoln County grand jury Dec. 3 after allegedly strangling a woman and otherwise assaulting her in a car in Bremen Aug. 8.
Jason M. Baughman, 46, was indicted for aggravated assault, class B, and violation of condition of release, class C.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy Justin Drake interviewed the woman at LincolnHealth – Miles Campus Aug. 9, the day after the alleged assault, which was domestic in nature, occurred.
According to Drake’s affidavit, the woman said she and Baughman had met at a mutual friend’s house in Bremen Aug. 8.
After Baughman and the woman left the house in a vehicle, “as he was driving he assaulted her by pulling her hair and slamming her head around the interior,” Drake wrote.
“He then used his forearm to strangle her to the point where she could not [breathe],” Drake wrote. “She expressed to me that she feared that he was going to kill her.”
Baughman called a friend to pick the woman up, but “before she could exit the vehicle he struck her with the back of his hand in the mouth,” Drake wrote.
At the time of the interview, Drake observed a number of injuries on the woman: bruising and red marks on her neck area, numerous bruises on both arms, and a split and swollen lip, according to his affidavit.
The violation of condition of release charge alleges Baughman violated bail by contact with the woman.
Baughman was prohibited from contact with the woman following an incident in Cushing in June where she was a witness to events leading to Baughman being arrested and charged with criminal threatening, reckless conduct, terrorizing, and criminal mischief, according to court documents.
The woman was also named as a victim of the terrorizing charge, according to the criminal complaint in Knox County Superior Court.
Baughman is due to be arraigned on the aggravated assault and violation of condition of release charges in Lincoln County Superior Court on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015 at 8:30 a.m.
Attempts to reach Baughman for comment were unsuccessful.
