With no water on Dec. 20, classes at Medomak Valley High School remained in session but several sporting events were canceled, becoming the second round of water-related cancellations at the school in less than a week.
Principal Harold Wilson said the water shut off at about 10:30 a.m., and staff members were escorting students across the campus to Medomak Middle School to use the restrooms.
“It’s very convenient so we don’t have to cancel school for the day,” he said.
Food for the students had already been prepared before the water issue arose, and Wilson was looking into how to provide drinking water for the students at the time.
The high school has had water issues throughout the year and recently had a new well pump installed, Wilson said.
RSU 40 Facilities and Transportation Director George Bridges said the Dec. 20 issue was related to the new pump and was determined to be a manufacturing defect when the pump was examined Dec. 21.
The wire leads on the motor appeared to be clipped, and so the wiring harness was replaced under warranty, Bridges said.
Due to the lack of water, the varsity basketball double header against Waterville scheduled for Dec. 20 was moved to Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014.
The freshman and JV games with Lincoln Academy on Dec. 21 were moved to Saturday, Dec. 28 at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and noon.
Another water issue on Dec. 14 related to a fitting blowing off a water line, which caused no damage, Bridges said previously. The issue prompted the cancellation of the wrestling meet and the girls basketball game against Morse scheduled for that day.
