A 41-space parking lot for employees of businesses in downtown Damariscotta and Newcastle opened July 1.
The town of Damariscotta is leasing the parking lot in partnership with the Twin Villages Downtown Alliance.
The lot will remain open through the end of August in an attempt to alleviate parking shortages and traffic congestion downtown during the busiest months of the season.
The partners are leasing the lot on a trial basis this year, although both have said they hope and plan to extend the agreement.
Twin Villages Downtown Alliance President Mary Kate Reny said the organization sold out of parking permits for the lot. The alliance charges $25 per permit for five or less; $50 per permit for six or more. Employees must display the permits when they park in the lot.
