A Winter Storm Watch issued Monday by the National Weather Service (NWS) was upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning regarding a weather system expected to blow through Lincoln County, and the forecast has become more finely tuned.
The storm is now forecast to begin dumping snow on the area beginning Wednesday morning, instead of the original Tuesday night prediction. The heaviest snowfall and winds are now forecast to pummel the area before noon on Wednesday, with snowfall rates possibly reaching 1-2 inches per hour during that period, according to forecasters. Some forecasters are warning of the possibility of white-outs when the strong winds and heavy snowfall combine in some areas.
Snowfall is expected to continue through the afternoon and move out by Wednesday evening, according to the NWS. Snowfall accumulations of 6-10 inches are forecast by the NWS, with the highest accumulation along the coastal areas, according to the NWS.
Winds will start from the northeast and then turn northerly as the storm progresses, gusting from 25 to 35 mph, according to the NWS.
The Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 7 a.m. to midnight on Wednesday.
The storm is moving out of the southeastern states where it was wreaking havoc with alternating layers of snow and ice. It is expected to combine with another low pressure area in the region and then start marching up the coast, strengthening as it goes.
The Lincoln County News website will continue to follow the progress of this event and post any additional information here as soon as it becomes available.
